VFD Speed Deviation — Feedback Mismatch

VFD-SPD1

Actual motor speed deviates from commanded speed beyond the acceptable tolerance window. Encoder or tachometer feedback does not match VFD output frequency.

Probable Causes (ranked)

Fix Steps

  1. 1 Check encoder mounting — verify coupling is tight on shaft with no play
  2. 2 Inspect encoder cable routing — must be separated from power cables by at least 12 inches
  3. 3 Monitor encoder feedback on VFD display vs. commanded speed — note the deviation amount
  4. 4 Check encoder cable shield — must be grounded at the VFD end only
  5. 5 Widen speed deviation tolerance parameter if application allows
  6. 6 Replace encoder if intermittent — test with a known-good encoder first

Field Trick

Spin the encoder by hand and watch the VFD speed display. It should increment smoothly. If it jumps erratically or shows negative speed, the encoder is bad. You don't need an oscilloscope for this — the VFD display tells you everything.
