Safety System — SIL/PLe Proof Test Required

SAFE-SIL1

Safety system component has reached its scheduled proof test interval. Performance level (PLe) or Safety Integrity Level (SIL) requires periodic testing to maintain safety integrity.

Probable Causes (ranked)

Fix Steps

  1. 1 Schedule the proof test during a planned downtime — test requires intentional safety device activation
  2. 2 Follow the machine-specific proof test procedure — this is a documented procedure, not improvised
  3. 3 Test each safety device: press each E-stop, open each guard door, interrupt each light curtain — verify machine stops
  4. 4 Verify all safety devices reset correctly after testing
  5. 5 Test redundant/dual-channel systems by faulting each channel independently — both must independently stop the machine
  6. 6 Document the proof test results, date, and tester name — this is required for safety audit compliance
  7. 7 Reset the proof test timer in the safety PLC/relay if applicable

Field Trick

Proof testing is where you find the safety system failures that normal operation hides. A machine can run for years with one channel of a dual-channel E-stop circuit broken — the other channel keeps working. The proof test catches this. Never skip proof tests just because the machine seems fine. Fine is not safe.
