Probable Causes (ranked)

Fix Steps

  1. 1 Check seal bar temperature with a contact thermometer — compare to the setpoint on the controller
  2. 2 Clean seal bars and Teflon tape with a Teflon-safe cleaner — replace Teflon tape if burned or torn
  3. 3 Increase seal dwell time by 0.1-0.2 seconds and test seal integrity
  4. 4 Verify film specifications — check temperature range required for the current film type
  5. 5 Check jaw pressure alignment — shim or adjust jaw parallel to ensure even pressure across the full seal width
  6. 6 If heater element resistance has increased (partial burnout), replace the element — measure ohms and compare to spec

Field Trick

When seals are good on one end but bad on the other, the seal bar is not parallel. Stick a piece of carbon paper between the jaws and close them. The carbon impression shows you exactly where the jaws make contact and where they don't. Adjust until the impression is even across the full width.
