Probable Causes (ranked)

Fix Steps

  1. 1 Load a new roll of tape — verify correct width (typically 2 or 3 inch) and adhesive type
  2. 2 Adjust tape tension spring or knob per manufacturer spec — tape should pull smoothly without jerking
  3. 3 Replace tape cut blade — most use a serrated or straight blade that is a consumable part
  4. 4 Inspect and replace pressure rollers if worn or glazed — they should be compliant/soft rubber
  5. 5 Adjust case height guides to match the current case size — top and bottom tape heads must contact flaps
  6. 6 Verify case flaps are folding flat — if flaps spring back up, the folding plow or compression section needs adjustment

Field Trick

When tape wrinkles on the case, everyone adjusts the tape head. But 80% of the time the problem is the case — the flaps aren't folding flat because the compression section is set too wide. Tighten the compression rails first so the flaps are fully closed and flat BEFORE the tape head. Then the tape goes on smooth.
