Metal Detector — Sensitivity Fault / Auto-Balance Fail

PKG-MDET1

In-line metal detector cannot achieve balance or sensitivity is outside the validated range. Detector cannot reliably detect contaminants at the required level.

Probable Causes (ranked)

Fix Steps

  1. 1 Run detector auto-balance cycle — let it recalibrate to current environmental conditions
  2. 2 Clean inside the detector aperture thoroughly — remove any embedded metal fragments or debris
  3. 3 Run test standards (ferrous, non-ferrous, stainless steel) through the detector — verify detection at required sensitivity
  4. 4 Check for new electrical equipment installed within 6 feet of the detector — move if possible, or add shielding
  5. 5 If product effect is too high, reduce detector sensitivity or switch to multi-frequency detection mode if available
  6. 6 Contact detector manufacturer service if auto-balance consistently fails — may indicate internal component failure

Field Trick

VFDs installed near metal detectors are the number one cause of 'random' false rejects and balance faults. The VFD output generates EMI that the metal detector picks up as a signal. If you can't move the VFD, install an output line reactor on the VFD and add a shielded cable between the VFD and motor. Distance helps too — every foot of separation reduces interference.
