Probable Causes (ranked)

Fix Steps

  1. 1 Check ring supervisor status — most managed switches report ring status
  2. 2 Walk the ring path — identify which link is broken by checking link LEDs
  3. 3 If device lost power, restore power and verify ring closes
  4. 4 Check cable at identified break point — replace if damaged
  5. 5 Verify all devices in ring are configured for ring protocol (DLR/MRP)
  6. 6 After repair, verify ring status returns to Closed/Normal

Field Trick

The ring supervisor tells you which port is the active standby (the 'break' in a healthy ring). In a fault, compare which port went active — the break is between the last active device and the next one.
