Conveyor Take-Up — End of Travel

CONV-TAKEUP1

Gravity or screw take-up mechanism has reached its maximum travel. Belt or chain has stretched to the point where the take-up can no longer maintain proper tension.

Probable Causes (ranked)

Fix Steps

  1. 1 Measure belt/chain elongation — determine if it needs to be shortened or replaced
  2. 2 For belt: cut and re-splice to remove slack — maintain proper belt tension with take-up at 50% travel
  3. 3 For chain: remove one or two links to shorten — reset take-up to mid-travel position
  4. 4 Clean and lubricate take-up slide rails — ensure free travel
  5. 5 Verify take-up limit switch is positioned correctly — should trip before physical end of travel
  6. 6 For gravity take-ups, verify counterweight is correct for belt type and width

Field Trick

When you re-splice a belt, always set the take-up to 40-50% travel, not fully retracted. If you set it at the minimum, the take-up has nowhere to go as the belt stretches and you'll be back cutting the belt again in 6 months. Leave room for the belt to stretch.
