AS/RS Crane Y-Axis (Lift) Position Error

ASRS-POS2

Crane lift mast position does not match commanded height. Cannot confirm alignment with target rack level. Load transfer cannot proceed.

Probable Causes (ranked)

Fix Steps

  1. 1 Check lift position sensor — clean, verify alignment, check cable connections
  2. 2 Measure lift chain elongation — compare to manufacturer's wear limit
  3. 3 Verify lift brake operation — brake should release fully when commanded and hold when released
  4. 4 Inspect mast channels for obstructions — debris, bent rails, or stuck product
  5. 5 Check lift drive VFD for active faults or current limiting — clear and verify VFD parameters
  6. 6 Run lift calibration from bottom limit to top limit — recalibrate position reference points

Field Trick

If the crane consistently overshoots or undershoots on the lift axis, check the lift VFD deceleration ramp. A worn lift brake combined with a fast decel ramp causes the load to bounce past the setpoint. Slow the decel ramp by 20% and retune the positioning PID — much cheaper than replacing the brake.
