Allen-Bradley POINT I/O Module Fault (1734 Series)

Probable Causes (ranked)

Fix Steps

  1. 1 Identify faulted module — check status LEDs on all modules in the POINT I/O bank, red=fault
  2. 2 Reseat the faulted module — lift latch, remove, re-insert onto base firmly until it clicks
  3. 3 Check 24VDC power to the POINT I/O bank — measure at power supply terminals
  4. 4 Check 1734-AENT adapter status — network LED should be solid green, module status should be green
  5. 5 Disconnect field wiring from the faulted module terminal block — if fault clears, the issue is in the field wiring
  6. 6 Compare module catalog number and firmware to the PLC I/O configuration — must match
  7. 7 If module is dead (no LEDs at all), check the base terminal block for 24VDC — replace module if power is present but no response

Field Trick

POINT I/O modules have a removable terminal block base. You can pull the module off the base without disconnecting field wiring. Snap a new module onto the existing base — all wiring stays intact. This makes swaps very fast in the field.
