PowerFlex VFD Fault F005 — Overvoltage

AB-PF-F005

PowerFlex drive DC bus voltage exceeded the maximum safe threshold. Typically occurs during motor deceleration when regenerative energy from the motor charges the DC bus faster than it can be dissipated.

Probable Causes (ranked)

Fix Steps

  1. 1 Increase deceleration ramp time — double the current value as a first test (Parameter A092 on PF525)
  2. 2 Check dynamic braking resistor wiring and resistance — measure with multimeter, compare to spec
  3. 3 Measure incoming AC voltage at drive input terminals — verify within drive rating
  4. 4 Enable bus regulator if available (Parameter A096 on PF525) — this automatically extends decel time to avoid overvoltage
  5. 5 For high-inertia applications, consider coast-to-stop instead of ramp-to-stop
  6. 6 If braking resistor and settings are correct but fault persists, the internal braking transistor may have failed — requires drive service or replacement

Field Trick

Enable the 'Bus Reg' feature (A096 = 1 on PowerFlex 525) before adjusting decel time. The drive will automatically slow down the deceleration to keep the bus voltage below the trip point. This often fixes F005 without any mechanical changes.
