Probable Causes (ranked)

Fix Steps

  1. 1 Check module LED status: green=OK, red=fault, off=no power
  2. 2 Reseat module — remove and firmly reinsert into chassis slot
  3. 3 Check module properties in I/O tree for specific fault code
  4. 4 Verify module firmware matches project configuration in Studio 5000
  5. 5 Inspect backplane connector for bent pins or contamination
  6. 6 Check field wiring for shorts — disconnect field wires and see if fault clears
  7. 7 If remote I/O, check EtherNet/IP cable and switch connections

Field Trick

Swap the faulting module with an identical one from a non-critical slot. If the fault follows the module, it's bad. If it stays in the slot, it's a backplane issue.
