Probable Causes (ranked)

Fix Steps

  1. 1 Check module status LED — solid RED is hardware fault, flashing RED is configuration/comm fault
  2. 2 Remove and reseat the module — ensure both latches click fully into the backplane connector
  3. 3 In Studio 5000, right-click the module in I/O tree and check Module Properties > Connection tab for specific fault text
  4. 4 Verify module catalog number matches what is configured in the controller
  5. 5 Check 24VDC field power to the module — measure at the module power terminals
  6. 6 Try the module in a different slot to rule out backplane slot damage
  7. 7 Flash module firmware to match controller compatibility list if firmware mismatch

Field Trick

CompactLogix 1769 modules have tiny internal fuses that blow when field wiring shorts. Before replacing a 'dead' module, check if the field-side fuse blew — on 1769-IQ16 input modules it is a surface-mount fuse on the board. A magnifying glass and soldering iron can save a $300 module.
