ControlLogix Task Watchdog Timeout

AB-1756-TASK

A periodic or event task in the ControlLogix controller exceeded its configured watchdog time. The task was aborted. If this is the safety task, safety outputs go to their configured fault state.

Probable Causes (ranked)

Fix Steps

  1. 1 In Studio 5000, check Controller Properties > Tasks tab — compare task period to max scan time
  2. 2 Identify which task timed out — check the major fault code for task number
  3. 3 Increase the task watchdog time temporarily to restore operation — but investigate root cause
  4. 4 Use the Controller Properties > Performance tab to view CPU utilization by task
  5. 5 Move non-time-critical routines to a slower continuous task
  6. 6 Check for any recently modified AOIs or programs that might have introduced a long execution path
  7. 7 If safety task, this is a SIL integrity issue — cannot simply increase watchdog without safety review

Field Trick

Go to Controller Properties > Tasks and look at the 'Max Scan Time' column. If max scan time is within 80% of the task period, you're one load spike away from a watchdog trip. Best practice is max scan should be below 50% of the period to leave headroom.
