Probable Causes (ranked)

Fix Steps

  1. 1 Check safety partner module status LED — STEADY RED is major fault, FLASHING RED is configuration issue
  2. 2 In Studio 5000, check Controller Properties > Safety tab for specific safety partner fault code
  3. 3 Verify primary and partner firmware versions are identical — update if mismatched
  4. 4 Reseat the safety partner module in the chassis
  5. 5 If safety signature mismatch, you must reload the safety application and re-validate — this requires the safety task password
  6. 6 Check safety task period vs. actual execution time — reduce safety program complexity or increase period if watchdog tripping
  7. 7 Replacing a safety partner requires re-validating the safety application per safety lifecycle requirements

Field Trick

After any GuardLogix firmware update, you MUST update both the primary and the safety partner to the same version. They must match exactly. If you update one and not the other, you get a partner fault and the safety system goes down. Always update them as a pair during the same maintenance window.
