ControlLogix 1756-EN2T Connection Timeout — I/O Module

AB-1756-ENET

A 1756-EN2T/EN2TR EtherNet/IP module lost connection to a remote I/O rack, VFD, or third-party device. CIP connection timed out at the configured RPI interval.

Probable Causes (ranked)

Fix Steps

  1. 1 In RSLogix 5000 / Studio 5000, check I/O tree — identify which module shows connection faulted (red X)
  2. 2 Ping the faulted device IP from the engineering PC — confirm basic connectivity
  3. 3 Check Ethernet cable and switch port LED — link light should be solid green
  4. 4 Compare device IP address to what is configured in the controller I/O module definition
  5. 5 Check managed switch for port errors — CRC errors, late collisions indicate cable issues
  6. 6 If using DLR ring, check ring status — a break causes topology change and brief connection drop
  7. 7 Increase RPI (requested packet interval) if network is borderline — but note this increases response time

Field Trick

When you lose comms to a remote I/O rack, check the EN2T module status LED first — STEADY green is good, FLASHING green means no connections configured, RED means major fault, FLASHING RED means IP conflict. The LED tells you the category of problem before you even open software.
